Description: This program discusses a comprehensive approach to AAC support by covering AAC fundamentals, various systems and devices, and training on assessments and strength-based goals. Participants will also learn effective implementation strategies, including core word resources and aided language stimulation while emphasizing the importance of team collaboration to improve communication outcomes.

Who This Course Is Good For:

  • Any SLP or professional who has one or more clients on your caseload who use AAC.
  • Any SLP or professional who only has access to a small number of AAC systems.
  • Any SLP or professional who needs digital resources and comprehensive AAC support.

Who This Course Isn’t Good For:

  • Any SLP or professional who has advanced training in AAC or assistive technology.
  • Any professional who does not currently work with any AAC users or plans to in the near future.

Presenters:

Venita Litvack, M.A, CCC-SLP

Venita is an Assistive Technology (AT) Consultant in south Florida. She has a passion for using AAC, AT, and literacy to support individuals with complex communication needs, autism, and other disabilities. Venita has delivered poster presentations on several topics related to AAC at ASHA and co-presented several ASHA CEU-accredited courses. Venita co-authored two articles published in ASHA Leader’s online publication, as well as the Lou Knows What to Do book series published by Boys Town Press. Recently, Venita started utilizing the power of social media to empower and motivate educators across the country through the Speechie Side Up podcast, blog, Instagram account, and YouTube channel.

Course Content: This program will focus exclusively on the following AAC apps and will not include information on other similar or related apps: LAMP Words for Life™ (WFL), Touch Chat HD, Tobii-Dynavox (TD) Snap® , GoTalk® Now, Proloquo2Go AAC, CoughDrop.

Learning Outcomes

As a result of this activity, participants will:

  • Define the core concepts of AAC
  • List the key features and functionalities of AAC devices, including the Tobii Dynavox I-Series and PRC Accent 1400, based on the device demonstration sessions
  • Describe the process for conducting AAC assessments and securing funding
  • Write SMART AAC goals that are strength-based
  • Describe effective AAC implementation strategies, including the use of core word resources, aided language stimulation, and descriptive teaching methods
