Beyond Form and Function: Making Sense of OMDs and SSDs

· September 24, 2025

Course Number: ABIO2516

When: Available October 8, 2025 – October 8, 2030

Where: Available under “Course Content” at the bottom of this page.

Description: This course discusses the confusion around orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMDs) and speech sound disorders (SSDs). Participants explore current research on whether OMDs cause SSDs, if OMD therapy improves speech, and how to identify children presenting with both. With a review of evidence-based approaches for treating SSDs, clinicians gain clarity on when and how OMT can support speech outcomes.

Who This Course Is Good For:

  • Any ASHA member, CCC holder, or other professional licensed or credentialed to practice speech-language pathology (SLP) or audiology.
  • Clinicians working with children who present with articulation errors, suspected OMDs, or both.
  • Professionals interested in evidence-based treatment approaches for speech sound disorders.
  • SLPs who want to better understand when and how OMT may support speech outcomes.

Who This Course Isn’t Good For:

  • Professionals who do not evaluate or treat children with speech sound disorders.
  • Clinicians looking solely for hands-on training in orofacial myofunctional therapy (this course reviews evidence and clinical considerations, not OMT certification).
