Description: In this session, we discuss the intricate relationship between oral language skills and literacy development, explore structured linguistic literacy approaches, and learn practical strategies for seamlessly integrating print into sessions. We also explore effective techniques for merging language intervention with disciplinary literacy and elevating therapy outcomes through comprehensive practice.

  • Any educator or caregiver who wants to learn more about merging language and literacy.
  • Any ASHA member, CCC holder, or other professionals who are licensed or credentialed to practice speech-language pathology (SLP) or audiology or preparing to earn ASHA CEUs.
  • Any professional who works with pediatric clients.
  • Any professional or caregiver who is seeking to learn more about literacy instruction.

Who This Course Isn’t Good For:

  • SLPs who are not currently practicing or are not actively involved in direct client care.
  • Experts with advanced knowledge in reading science and structured literacy.

Presenters:

Venita Litvack, M.A, CCC-SLP

Venita is an Assistive Technology (AT) Consultant in south Florida. She has a passion for using AAC, AT, and literacy to support individuals with complex communication needs, autism, and other disabilities. Venita has delivered poster presentations on several topics related to AAC at ASHA and co-presented several ASHA CEU accredited courses. Venita co-authored two articles published in ASHA Leader’s online publication, as well as the Lou Knows What to Do book series published by Boys Town Press. Recently, Venita started utilizing the power of social media to empower and motivate educators across the country through the Speechie Side Up podcast, blog, Instagram account, and YouTube channel.

Leanne Dall,MHSC CCC-SLP

Leanne is an ASHA certified, EBLI certified pediatric speech language pathologist and mom of four. She is also trained in Self-Regulated Strategy Development and Reading Simplified. She knows that oral and written language are inseparable and provides integrated intervention for optimal effects using lots of contextualized and narrative based intervention combined with a structured linguistic literacy approach. Leanne enjoys working with SLPs to support them in optimizing their therapy. Leanne is also the author of the Bjorem Speech Story Cue Card Deck, Past Tense Verbs, Spelling with Homophones and Prefixes, Suffixes and Bases Decks. When she is not working, she is most often exploring local playgrounds and splash pads with her kids. She holds a MHSc. in Speech and Language Pathology from the University of Toronto and a BASc. in Psychology and Linguistics from McGill University.
