Cultural Competemility and Ethical Considerations for the SLP

Description: In this session, we will define cultural competemility and how it can be practiced within the field of Speech-Language Pathology. We will examine how 2 main principles of ethics from ASHA 2023 are mandating cultural competemility and how it can also be applied to supervision.

Who This Course Is Good For:

Any ASHA member, CCC holder, or other professionals who are licensed or credentialed to practice speech-language pathology (SLP) or audiology or preparing to earn ASHA CEUs.
Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) who work with diverse populations, including individuals from different cultural backgrounds, ethnicities, and languages.
SLPs who want to enhance their understanding of cultural factors that may influence communication and treatment outcomes.
Professionals working in educational settings, healthcare facilities, private practices, or community organizations where they interact with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.
SLP students or recent graduates who want to develop their skills in providing culturally competent care from the beginning of their careers.
Supervisors and administrators in speech-language pathology programs or clinics who want to ensure their staff members are equipped to provide ethical and culturally sensitive services.

Who This Course Isn’t Good For:

Any professional that does not currently work in the field providing treatment or plans to in the near future.
Individuals who have already completed comprehensive training or coursework in cultural competency and ethical considerations specific to their field.

Presenters:

Venita Litvack, M.A, CCC-SLP

Venita is an Assistive Technology (AT) Consultant in south Florida. She has a passion for using AAC, AT, and literacy to support individuals with complex communication needs, autism, and other disabilities. Venita has delivered poster presentations on several topics related to AAC at ASHA and co-presented several ASHA CEU accredited courses. Venita co-authored two articles published in ASHA Leader’s online publication, as well as the Lou Knows What to Do book series published by Boys Town Press. Recently, Venita started utilizing the power of social media to empower and motivate educators across the country through the Speechie Side Up podcast, blog, Instagram account, and YouTube channel.

Melanie Evans, M.S., CCC-SLP

Melanie Y. Evans, M.S. CCC-SLP (she/her/ella) is an ASHA-certified bilingual pediatric Speech-Language Pathologist licensed to practice in Texas, California, and Oklahoma. She is also the founder of Pediatric Speech Sister, whose mission is to assist other speech-language pathologists on their cultural competency journeys and bring more inclusion in the field; and Praxis Speech Sister, a digital brand designed to give aspiring SLPs the tools and strategies needed to pass the SLP Praxis exam and build their dream careers. Melanie dedicates her career to serving Black and Latinx populations and closing the academic achievement gap.
