Description: In this course, we discover the link between phonological processing and speech sound disorders. Participants explore the APPLES project, its goals, and its impact on school-based SLPs. The course covers obtaining NIH grants, anticipated outcomes, and ways SLPs can engage in research to enhance growth and better support students with speech sound challenges.
Who This Course Is Good For:
- Any ASHA member, CCC holder, or other professional licensed or credentialed to practice speech-language pathology (SLP) or audiology, or preparing to earn ASHA CEUs.
- Any school-based SLP working with children who present with speech sound disorders.
- Any professional interested in understanding the connection between phonological processing and speech sound development.
- Any SLP seeking to learn about grant-funded research and opportunities to participate in or apply research findings to their practice.
Who This Course Isn’t Good For:
- Any professional who does not work with speech sound disorders and does not plan to in the near future.
Presenters:

VENITA LITVACK, M.A, CCC-SLP
Venita is an Assistive Technology (AT) Consultant in south Florida. She has a passion for using AAC, AT, and literacy to support individuals with complex communication needs, autism, and other disabilities. Venita has delivered poster presentations on several topics related to AAC at ASHA and co-presented several ASHA CEU accredited courses. Venita co-authored two articles published in ASHA Leader’s online publication, as well as the Lou Knows What to Do book series published by Boys Town Press. Recently, Venita started utilizing the power of social media to empower and motivate educators across the country through the Speechie Side Up podcast, blog, Instagram account, and YouTube channel.

KELLY FARQUHARSON, PH.D., CCC-SLP
Dr. Kelly Farquharson is the director of the Children’s Literacy and Speech Sound (CLaSS) Lab. The lab’s mission is to help children with speech and language impairments achieve classroom success. Her research is funded by the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) through the NIH. She has authored over 50 peer-reviewed publications. She is an ASHA Fellow and a Board Certified Specialist in Child Language.
